Vision Zero for Youth Demonstration Project

Partnership with the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center and City of Philadelphia

Philadelphia Mayor Kenney signs on to Vision Zero for Youth at the city’s annual Vision Zero update press conference in October 2020.

This two-year project (begun in October 2019) provided the opportunity to evaluate a youth-focused approach with the ultimate goal of improving road safety for all. Philadelphia’s work serves as an example for other cities and was the first demonstration of the impact that a youth focus can have. Philadelphia was selected because of its priority for children’s well-being, road safety and multi-agency collaboration. The project kicked-off with Mayor Kenney announcing it at the city’s annual Vision Zero update press conference.

Work included a child pedestrian crash analysis, development of potential child-focused Vision Zero plan strategies, integration of child-focused information into city pedestrian safety study, stakeholder engagement, pilot-testing systemic pedestrian safety analysis adapted for youth focus, prioritization of city streets and intersections and identification of opportunities to integrate child focus into city transportation policies and practices.
